Do You Volunteer Your Time?

If so, where? and are you able to bring a small child along with you?

I would really like to volunteer my time somewhere but I have a two year old shadow that is with me at all times. I was wondering if it was still possible.

I know I could possibly visit people in nursing homes but I think I would like to try something different this time.

Oh, also, if anyone has pets that are therapy dogs, how did you get them certified and what work do they do?

It's OK if you don't have any suggestions, just please bump for those who may.

I volunteer in my dd's kindergarten class. No, I can't bring my toddler but I wouldn't want to.

I volunteer for Operation Troop Appreciation, which is a local group that does fundraising to provide deployed soldiers with equipment & morale items that are not available to them where they are. The OTA sends everything from Under Armor t-shirts to DVDs/video games (and the systems) to foodstuffs (a favorite is fruit cocktail).

The OTA runs a small store at a local mall to help raise money to purchase items & to pay for postage, but a small child wouldn't be able to help there. However, a small child could help sort items, pack boxes, or apply postage for mailers.

You could check around & see if you have a similar organization in your area.

I'm on the board of directors for the local softball league & I've been a GS leader.
I have volunteered a few times with the Giving tree program. I think it would be difficult taking a 2 year old to most volunteering places except where the elderly are.

Look for multigenerational daycare. It's like a fun preschool atmosphere mixed with nursing home residents. There was one by my exhusbands house, it looked like a lot of fun.

Yes I plan on making it known clearly that she will be with me when I call these places so if it would be an issue they can let me know and I can move on to the next option.

I volunteered 2 hours a week at the school library, reading to kids and shelving books.  I also serve on the little league board.  But I couldn't do any of these things when my kids were smaller.  It's easier to wait until they are older.
