Please help! Someone said baby turtles aren't safe for pregnant women??

My husband just surprised me for my birthday (which is tomorrow) with a baby turtle!! No bigger than a half dollar!! Turtles are my favorite. But I just called my grandma to tell her the good news and she said baby turtles carry horrible diseases especially dangerous to pregnant women. Has anyone else ever heard of this?? Please help!!

Yes, turtles carry Salmonella. Pregnant women and children should not be handling them.

They carry salmonella on their shells. Just wash your hands really well after you good them or clean their tanks. Or wear gloves.

Just keep the handling to a minimum and don't forget to wash your hands after each time you do touch/handle your turtle...I think you'll be fine :)

Yes salmonella and I believe the same disease you can get from uncooked lunch meat (I can't remember what its called). These are most dangerous in your first trimester. Try not to handle it and have your husband do the cleaning of the tank and stuff! Yay for a new pet!

They carry salmonella.  You're not going to die or be sick just from having one.  Good handwashing is really all that's needed here.

They can carry salmonella. You don't need to get rid of him though. Just wear gloves and wash your hands well after handling him and have your husband clean his cage frequently.
