White privilege -- if you are white are you aware it exists? If you are not white are you aware it exits?

Are you aware of the reality which has been labeled 'white privilege'?

(it takes 2 seconds to find out what 'white privilege' is (google is our friend) ---- it takes a lot longer to accept it exists --- whether an indiviual accepts it or not does not change the fact it DOES exist).

Wikipedia is not a reputable source.

The basics are here on wiki -- it really does take a long time (as a white person, like me) to realize just how present white privilege is in our society.

Your "example" is a perfect example of white privilege.

Quoting ImNotKarl:

I grew up poor and white, in trailer parks off and on, and have been frequently called poor white trash, and clawed my way out of it. If I can do it, anyone can, white or otherwise.

It can be. It depends on whether or not the article is "sealed." Regardless, a smart person would use the sources listed in that article as a starting point for their research.

I'm not white and I'm aware that it exists.

White people that aren't aware of "white privilege" prove its existence.

Crimes by whites against blacks don't have "added punishments." It's usually the other way around.

The fact that you are unaware of its existence proves its existence.

Quoting LuLuThatsWho:

Look at the fact that every decent employer is an affirmative action employer and then tell me more about this privilege given to white people based on skin color alone.

Look at the fact that crimes by whites against blacks have additional punishments for being more hateful than crimes by blacks against whites.

Oh please, yes.  Let's talk about all of the unearned privileges that we get.

There are just a few of the reputable sources (unless you don't consider well-known universities, colleges, academic journals (peer reviewed) and government websites to be 'reputable' -- in which case I would ask you "what IS reputable to you?")

I think that's funny. People that aren't white usually don't agree with what you said.

Quoting Anonymous:

Now a days its actually people that aren't white that get more privileges.

I really shouldn't be surprised --- it is practically included in the definition that it is mostly invisible to people who are white.

And, studies have mirrored the reaction this post has gotten in people giving their personal experiences that apparently 'proves' there is no such thing -- they get defensive --- they feel attacked -- rather than look into it and think it isn't about t.v. channels or scholarships 'just' for minorities.  People don't feel any obvious, blatant, in-your-face 'privilege' so they say it doesn't exist (though whiteness is completely embedded in our society -- they only notice the things that go AGAINST THE NORM (like Black History Month)......FORGETTING that pretty much every history book they opened in school was 'white history' (oh, except for the chapter on slavery and the civil war.....maybe Martin Luther King Jr.).
