No. It has been linked here many times:Under the Illinois babysitting laws, children under the age of 13 need a babysitter. If any child this age is left alone, the parent is guilty of child abuse under Illinois law. The law reads, "Any minor under the age of 14 years whose parent or other person responsible for the minor's welfare leaves the minor without supervision for an unreasonable period of time without regard for the mental or physical health, safety or welfare of that minor." That's the age for babysitting, not staying home alone.

Quoting beerebelly:

Most don't. I do know in Illinois it is 14. I would hate that.

Heck no to the overnight! I agree*

Quoting Luna091306:

Depends on how long and what time of day. I would be okay leaving dh's 12 and 11 year old alone during the day for a couple of hours. I wouldn't leave them overnight or for a long period of time though.

We started leaving dh's two oldest alone when they were 11 and 10. We have left the two younger ones with them before but I don't like doing that simply because they tend to fight. They are 5 and 9.

This is what I think.

Quoting momof3jam:

I'd say 10-12 for like an hour or two.

Your 17 year old goes everywhere with you?

Quoting LntLckrsCmQut:

There is absolutely no reason for me to leave my children home alone.

My kids are 17 and 5.

Not sure yet, the oldest is 6.  I'm thinking around 13.

Depends on the child.

At 9 my son would stay home while I ran to the store, about 20min total.

He'd play his games & knew not to open the door or anything.

He will be 13 in Feb & is a great kid & I can trust him home alone.  My DD is 8 & no way, she's crazy always climbing trees & such.  I wouldn't trust her home alone; not for quite some time anyway.

I can't even wrap my brain around that. When I was a kid, I stayed home alone starting at age six for up to 12 hours at a time. When I was 13, I babysat all the neighborhood kids, even small babies. Thinking back, that was insane.

Anyway, I would say that a mature ten year old is fine for short periods of time. The law in your state may say differently.

Interesting. I will have to look up Texas laws. .I liked before and didn't find much.

I say 10.. All of my kids started staying home alone by that age if not a little sooner. The state I live in does not have a law as to what age they can be left home alone. I teach them the safety rules early and it has never been a problem. But everyone has to do what they feel is best for their kids..
