You know you're poor when you and your dh go a few days without food (just a loaf of bread) so your kids can eat filling and proportioned meals. Been there done that. We've also been so poor that we had to go through an entire NJ winter without heat or electricity with an infant.

We are eating beansand rice because we can't afford food. We have been eating beans and rice for months now. You get a huge amount for a little price

I've been given bags of clothes but the jeans are always either too big or too long (i have a belt but after having my daughter 2.5 years ago it doesn't fit. Even the jeans I bought when I did a semester in college are falling off me:(

I'm so short I guess I need to look at once upon a child for jeans.......

The coat keeps me warm but is falling apart.... No way in heck can I cut my own hair i'd butcher it (i have mild cp and am left handed).

The mall is way to expensive for me too, i'd rather go to a thrift store

1. You know your poor when you don't have a car and either catch the bus walk or bum rides......

2. You have to move and will struggle with christmas for your kid.......

3. You have to cash in cans and bottles for extra money for diapers wipes ect

4. Wear the same coat you've had since middle school because you can't afford a new one for yourself not even on lay away

5. Your own mother bothers you about your wordrobe and shoes and will nit stop until you buy yourself something new.

6. You feel guilty spending money getting your hair cut because it could have went to your child.

I never speant mone on my hair, I cut it myself, yes because its way too expensive to go and have someone do it. I got my slef winter coat at a thrift store for like $4. I could never buy one for $30 or more, I feel like waisting money that way. All our clothes are from the thrift store. The last time I went to the mall to buy something is almost 7 years ago.

No not sracastic at all.  I am sorry, I thought everyone goes through hard times sometimes.  I do think you are fortunate.

Quoting Bertha21:

Are you being sarcastic? :/
I really am lucky though, I have great parents and an amazing SO.

Quoting Tennismom360:

Wow really. You are very fortunate!

Quoting Bertha21:

Thank goodness I have never been through rough times, and hope I never will! I don't consider someone who has enough money for food poor. I wish you the best!

If you count what I get for my daughter we bring in just under $1400 (before my Medicare is taken out) a month. But because my MIL lives here also they count her income ($1500 after Medicare), but her monthly medical expenses are about 1/3 of that. She is a brittle type I diabetic, and has multiple other issues that she sees 4 different specialists, and is on 7 different medications.
Also not counting my 19 y/o son's income either. He pays $500 a month to us to offset his transportation and food. He works nights about 35 miles north of us.

There has to be a mistake. $12k for a family of four is well below the poverty line. You should absolutely qualify for SNAP. I would look into that again if I were you.

Quoting Anonymous:

When all u can afford is the food that you get from wic, that is poor. There are times that is all I have to eat. Will not let my 3 y/o starve if I can help it. What is awful is that we don't qualify for snap benefits. The only income in the house is SSDI, and a family of 4. I soooo wish I could work again!!! I was making $30,000 a yr b4 I had to quit working. Now u am having to survive on $12,000 (before Medicare is taken out).
