Phone service opinions???

My husband and I are currently with AT&T, but our contract expires in March. We don't have smartphones (But we do want them) we get unlimited text and something like 600 or 700 minutes of talk. In our opinion, it's not worth it. We pay close to $150 for the 2 phones and we don't really get much.
We want to switch to something else that doesn't have a 2 year contract and that gives us unlimited text, talk, and web service. We've looked into the wal*mart plan and we've seen a commercial for Net10Wireless.
There's a few others we've considered. Most of them use the bigger companies' cell towers, but my husband wants 4G service.
I don't mind paying for a smartphone out-of-pocket and hooking up with one of those smaller companies, but not sure how the service is/dead zones/dropped calls/customer service.
Any advice ladies?
IDK. I have T-Mobile. I'm pretty happy with them.
ETA: I guess it's all about location too.
