What's the deal about preteens & teens (12 & up) drinking coffee? I mean, my parents never told us we couldn't and I've been drinking it since I was 10, it never hurt me or my siblings.
I have seen parents give their Kids , pepi, coke, mountain dew etc. And that's ok. Mountain Dew has a ton of caffeine in it, so why is that ok, but coffee is so wrong. At least the coffee has some health benefits.
And for kids who have ADHD or other issures it can be a help. I have bad allergies and my brother has asthma. When we were kids we'd drink coffee to help with the symptoms.
That's my question. Why do you think some parents give kids other drinks with sugar, corn syrup and caffeine, such as Mountain Dew, etc, But Coffee is a big no no ?
How about wanting to see a child drink more water instead of saying I'd rather see them drink coffee than soda! It's not like someone's putting a gun to one's head and making them choose one or the other...my point I've been trying to convey is caffeine in general is not good for you. And yet everyone seems to still say.."I'd rather see them drink coffee than soda." C'mon give me a break!
But if it was up to them, all they'd drink is water
My husband and I never drank coffee, so it was never an issue with my kids.
Coffee can also help those who have asthma. My parents gave me coffee and milk when I was young. I once changed to decaf, but went back to regular when I found out it would help with my ADHD. The worst thing I saw, were parents buying their children energy drinks! So much worse than any other caffeinated drink.
I asked my husband today, he has ADHD,severe in fact, if he would try coffee instead of the adderall he flat out said, "Adderall" coffee has too many side effects compared to the man made drug. And he quoted also, "just because coffee is natural doesn't mean it's good for you, cyanide is natural,so is heroin, cocain, marijuana, and for the moms that give their kids ANY form of caffeine, you are deluded if you think it does your kid good." end quote. So from someone who suffers from ADHD well there you go I guess.
No idea; although coffee does have more caffiene in a cup than Mountain Dew has in a can. And you are right, ritalin is a xanthin derivative like caffeine and they are metabolites of each other.

Your husband needs to do a little research because it is very obvious he doesn't know what he is talking about. Why bad side effect of coffee does he think coffee has? Why does he falsely believe that coffee has "too many" side effects when compared to a schedule II narcotic? Has he even bothered to research the benefits of drinking coffee such as it has been found to lower the risk of getting colon cancer?
ETA: Your husband reminds me of the ignorant people who claim that formula is better than breast milk for babies because it is man made.

Myths about Caffeine
Many of the negative things you’ve heard about caffeine are actually myths, several of which I’ve debunked in previous shows.
It’s a myth, for example, that caffeine can increase pain, tenderness, or benign lumps in the breast, also called fibrocystic changes. Trial after trial has found no connection. It’s also a myth that caffeine weakens your bones, as I explained in nutrition for healthy bones.
And, as I explained in the dehydration myth, caffeinated beverages are not dehydrating. Caffeine is a diuretic, meaning that it makes you pee more. But the fluids in coffee and tea more than replace any fluids that you lose due to the diuretic effect. Keep in mind, though, that caffeine pills don’t contain any fluids and, therefore, can be dehydrating.
Finally, you might have heard that caffeine or coffee is bad for your heart. Some studies have found that drinking unfiltered coffee—such as French press or percolated coffee—elevates cholesterol. It appears to be volatile oils in the coffee rather than caffeine that affect cholesterol, and only in men. But coffee drinkers are no more likely to develop heart disease. And although caffeinated coffee can temporarily increase your heart rate a bit, it does not cause irregular heartbeat.
What are the Downsides of Caffeine?
There are some legitimate downsides of caffeine but they are relatively minor. Some people find that too much caffeine makes them jittery, anxious, or disrupts their sleep. How many cups of coffee it takes to make your hair stand on end, or how late in the day you can drink a cup of coffee without staring at the ceiling all night, are subject to a high degree of individual variation..
If you drink coffee or other caffeinated beverages regularly, you’re much less likely to experience any negative side effects from caffeine. That’s because caffeine is highly habituating. Some might even say it’s addictive, although that seems a little harsh.
These withdrawal symptoms are harmless and usually last only a few days. Or, you can make it easier on yourself by tapering your consumption off over the course of a couple of weeks. But hey, if it’s not broken, why fix it?
