What's the deal about preteens & teens (12 & up) drinking coffee? I mean, my parents never told us we couldn't and I've been drinking it since I was 10, it never hurt me or my siblings.

I have seen parents give their Kids , pepi, coke, mountain dew etc. And that's ok. Mountain Dew has a ton of caffeine in it, so why is that ok, but coffee is so wrong. At least the coffee has some health benefits.

And for kids who have ADHD or other issures it can be a help. I have bad allergies and my brother has asthma. When we were kids we'd drink coffee to help with the symptoms.

That's my question. Why do you think some parents give kids other drinks with sugar, corn syrup and caffeine, such as Mountain Dew, etc, But Coffee is a big no no ?

My SKs drink it on occasion. If we happen to stop at a Starbucks or something like that on a road trip then we'll get them both a coffee of their choice. DD is still too young to drink it though.

coffee has more then twice the amount of caffeine and young kids dont need to become addicted to that much caffeine. Even decaf coffee has up to 12mg of caffeine that can be more then some sodas. Pluse there are negative heath effects from caffeine, it robbs the body of necessary nutrients such as calcium and other vitamins kids need.

Quoting Anonymous:

Coffee doesn't come with chemicals and sugars but how many kids actually drink black coffee? Coffee mate is full of both.

Quoting Aislinn:

Coffee has a LOT of health benefits. Soda has ZERO. I am with you, Hon. It makes absolutely no sense, what so ever. Plus, coffee does not come with the chemicals and sugars, either...

Who the hell uses Coffee Mate? Gross.  Chemicals in a jar.  Yippee! You know, they sell fresh cream, everyday, at the grocery store? Also, one teaspoon of sugar only contains 15 grams of sugar. How many grams of sugar does a soda have? And, again, coffee is loaded with antioxidants and a whole list of health benefits. That outweighs the sugar and soda has not ONE health benefit. Not even one.

Coffee has health benefits? O.o

I've been drinking coffee since I was about 12 or 13. They told us when we were little that if we drank it, we would be short. I told then I didn't care. :D

I don't give my kids coffee... nor soda. Maybe I should.. Maybe it would have the oppposite affect and make my son less hyper. LOL

My dh was allowed to start drinking coffee when he was FIVE. o_O you should see his teeth. I don't allow my 3yo to drink soda (she hates the fizz anyways, freaks her out lol) or coffee. She's a green tea fanatic though. In the end, I could care less what other people are giving their kids. However, I will admit to being disturbed by parents who fill up their baby's bottle with soda.
