My 5th grader returned home from school highly concerned about something and I can't sleep over this as well. He was told that due to misbehavior in assembly that his ENTIRE fifth grade class will not be given lunch or recess.

I thought at first he was trying to get out of going to school, but then he said he wanted to go to school but hated to be hungry. I'm diabetic and I watch him carefully. He shows some signs of hypoglycemia here and there and I'm very concerned.

Do you think they're bullshitting him? Is this legal? Should I call the school tomorrow morning? I told my son I'd send him anyway but that if he was denied food to demand to call home.

Your thoughts please?

If you find out from the school they really did take away recess and lunch as punishment, tell them you will be contacting the head of the school district, and the local media about their actions and make sure you do it.

The school district head honcho should by rights contact the school to let them know a teacher/principal cannot deny children food as a form of punishment, and If your local media is anything like ours, they'll jump on a story where school kids are mistreated, and denying a child food at school is right up there with being one of the worst.  Going public with the story will also stop this type of shit from happening to any other kids at the school as well.

Maybe they ment no lunch recess and he misunderstood.

There is no such thing as lunch recess.

No, the kids have lunch at lunch, or lunchtime, or lunch break, then play until lunch, lunchtime or lunch break, usually an hour, is over.  Recess is recess, a 10 -15 minute break from school work.

At my school, you can keep the child in for most of break - they have to have an opportunity to go to the bathroom & to eat their lunch. It would be very unusual for the whole grade to be kept in.

They may have to eat lunch in their room.

Quoting divinedimension:

Nope...I asked that too. He said no lunch AND no recess. The entire fifth grade.
