Do you REALLY believe in ADD/ADHD

I don't have enough experience with it but the kids I do know that "have" it are constantly eating sugar, drinking soda, no boundries, rules, etc. Do people really try doing ALL they can before medicating? And yes, I am posting ANON because I realize it's a touchy subject and I am probably going about it the wrong way but I truly want to know. I hear add/adhd and cringe honestly. Like it's SO over prescribed and kids are WAY over medicated these days, I feel like it's just an excuse (Not in all cases, I am sure)
Yes, my youngest son had it. He never successfully passed a grade by merit, he was socially passed. Then when i got custody of him, I took him to a child specialist and he was medicated and I also supervised him at home and made sure he did his homework. He passed into the 6th grade on his own merit with straight A's. I think he still does, but he's an adult and so he chooses to ignore the signs. His father had it too.
Honestly I never used to. I always used to think how ridiculous is was that these poor kids were so quickly diagnosed and then but on drugs just to "fix" it. BUT.........now that I have a & "spirited" child & (won't call ADD until she's diagnosed) my opinion has changed alot! But I totally believe that it's alot to do with the toxins in our everyday lives like food, pollution, water etc. So yes I very much believe that ADD/ADHD is real and it's becoming more and more common.
This is interesting:

None of us knows what another mom is going through with her child. Judging other mothers is so counterproductive and insensitive, IMO.
It is a real diagnosis; ADD. My mother in law has it. I lived with her for 2 years. I couldn't live with her anymore because of her unorganized behavior.
My son has it but he is not medicated anymore.I didn't like the side effects so we have worked on it through other ways.
YES my daughter was just diagnosed with ADHD and started taking meds for it. We tried EVERYTHING before. We changed her diet multiple times. She rarely ever has soda. (she eats VERY healthy anyway) She has boundaries and I am very consistent with my discipline. She goes to bed at 7pm and sleeps until 7am. I HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING. At parent teacher conferences I was told that because of her lack of focus she will have to repeat her grade because she cannot focus enough to do her work. She has been on medication for 1 week and today we got her behavior report (which we've done for months because of her impulsive behavior) and it was PERFECT. I couldn't believe it. She is a different child. I did not want to put her on meds. I cried my eyes out. I want my child to be normal and healthy. My heart breaks because of this. When people say its just an excuse it does hurt a little.. They have never been around a child who actually has a problem. We have known she had a problem since she was 2-3. I try not to let ignorant people get to me but I have been through too much with this. I KNOW my daughter has it I can say that I do think it is over diagnosed and probably over medicated. I talked a lot with my daughters teacher and previous teachers and they tell me that they can see the kids who need it, the kids who benefit from meds, and the kids who are like zombies. My daughter is not a zombie thank God. I wouldn't allow that.
I think it is over diagnosed but is very real. Also, I think our school system and society has failed to remember what children are actually supposed to act like, and instead think that this artificial calm we've shoved on them is the norm.
Yes. If you saw our oldest son, without his meds, next to our other two children, you would believe. They have all been raised the same. They all eat the same diet, have the same set of rules, etc. Until he was diagnosed, we wondered what was wrong with US. Why was our child behaving this way? Where did we go wrong?
