How do you stop a 1 yo from hitting?

Ok, so I'm a first time mom and I'm not sure how I should handle this.

This is a new thing for my 15 mo old son.  When he gets into something he shouldn't, I pick him up to stop him.  He gets angry, turns beat red and screams, and then hits me in the face.  It's kind of funny to watch (doesn't hurt), but obviously we can't allow this kind of behavior.  I can't swat him back, so what do I do?  I have been grabbing his arm and very sternly telling him "NO! WE DO NOT HIT!"  Is he too young for time out?  I don't know if he would realize what he's being punished for.

Need some advice!

Not too young for time out in my opinion.  We always did one minute for each year of age. ( one minute for one year olds, two minutes for two year olds, etc.)

I used to grab my son's hand and say "touch softly... like this" and then I'd show him.

He never hit out of anger though, so I don't know if it would work the same?

When my 14 month old hits or bites, I tell her no and put her in her pack n play for 2 minutes.

Do you use the pack in play for other things as well?

Nope thats her designated time-out spot since she wont stand in the corner like my 2 year old.
