Do you feel it was necessary in light of the school shooting?

My son's class was reading a historical fiction book about Birmingham, AL in 1963 to learn about the civil rights movement. At one point in the book, it addresses the church bombing that killed the 4 little girls.

The class has been reading it for weeks and has been really enjoying it. Now, because of Sandy Hook, they are dumping the book.

Most history is pretty tragic. I don't really agree that they should dump the book that approaches true historical facts and that they are enjoying learning from just because it is sad or not pleasant.

The kids are in 5th grade.

I do not think they should dump the book. Seems backwards to me, shouldn't they be teaching what students can relate to?

It might be hard. I can't imagine being a kid and going to school at this time. :'(

A lot of kids are stuggling right now and don't need a reminder that this has happened more than once.

They should not dump the book.  Can't erase history & it should be taught no matter what.

No. They shouldn't dump the book. Terrible, horrible ugly things take place all the time, they make up our history. We can't sweep them under the rug and pretend they don't happen.
