My friend just posted on FB that her workplace taxed a gift card she had won from the company. She just noticed it on her check.

Is this common? I've never heard of this

I've never heard of it being done on a gift card but I know cash and cars won can be taxed.

Idk how much the gift card was but it couldn't have even that much. She won it by guessing how many M&M's were in a jar.

Yep, normal. My mom gets points at work and you can use them to get anything from a catalog. They have gift cards, jewelry, clothing, toys, trips. All kinds of stuff. No matter what she picks she gets taxed like 40% tax. The really bad thing is that they price it high. If she picks a pool toy that would cost $15 in the store and they say it has a value of $25 she has to pay a 40% tax on the value of $25.

My mom won a $100 Macys gift card and they taxed her $30 for it.

Never had that happen. We have often won gift cards during holiday celebrations or team building exercises at meetings, conferences etc. It should not be taxed like a commission or luxury tax.
