Is this safe? Carseat question with pic

Okay DH and I are trying desperately to NOT have to buy a new car.

In less than a month we will have 3 kids in carseats. I have a Chevy Equinox.

I'm trying to get all 3 carseats to fit in the backseat together.

My oldest DS is a safety 1st high back seat with the harness. It will later convert to a high back booster.

DS2 is in a Cosco Sceniria (spell?).

The new baby will be in an evenflo infant carrier.

I tried to arrange the seats a billion different ways. The only way I could get all three seats in was DS1 on the passenger side using the seatbelt; DS2 in the middle with the latch system; and the infant base behind the driver side with the seatbelt.

I was able to get all the seats in snug and tight.
But hen I went to put the carrier on the base it kept getting caught on DS2 seat.

So I unhooked the base and reattached it with the carrier already hooked. Hope that make sense.

Everything is all tight again, but the base is hanging off the edge of the seat as shown above.

Is that safe?

I would think as long as it's on the seat and tight with the level at the right place, that it's okay. I'm not positive though, so hopefully someone else knows.

Take it to your health department and ask. They usually have someone who specializes in car seat safety. Or if they don't the local police department might.

I'm no expert. But you can't get the infant seat in the middle at all? What about buying a new, narrower seat to replace the Scenaria - is that an option? It'd be a lot cheaper than a new car anyway ;o)

what happens if you put say 7lbs of something in it? does it still stay 'up'?

It looks fine to me, but there is an alternative that I've had to utilize more than once... if you have one of the newer infant car seats, they can be used without the base. They have the hooks on the top that is still really secure (otherwise they definitely wouldn't be there).

I would ask in the car seat group, because (from what I understand) it depends on the seat. Some seats are ok with overhang and others aren't.

http://www.seatcheck.org/ with an install that complicated I'd recommend an in person check. You can find a certified person here.
