The high school here starts in grade 8 and children are allowed to leave at lunch. I used to love to walk to the store and get a slurpee.
All te kids have lunch at the same time and they can either eat anywhere in the school, outside or go somewhere for lunch and I'm okay with that.

I don't know about the high school in our town (ODS is only in 4th grade), but the one I went to was an open campus. It. Was. Awesome!

Yes they do.  Within a few blocks of the high school, there is a Taco Bell, Burger King, McDonalds, Panera, a sushi place, and a couple other things.

Also, once they're a sophomore, there are many opportunities available to them through the district - theatre, auto mechanics, teaching academy, and a few others - at different schools.  So kids are coming and going all day (the school does NOT provide transpotation to these things - you need to arrange your own, so most of the kids drive themselves).
