I asked a mentally handicapped man if he was an elf today :/

I was at work today, I'm a waitress and a couple came up to the host stand to be seated. the guy, who looks totally normal comes up and says "HI!! I'm BUDDY!" Now, keep in mind as a server I have people f*** with me all the time, joke with me try to get my goat, etc. and I'm expected, as part of my job to play along and stuff.  Now, the first thing that came to my mind was that he must be imitating Buddy the elf on the movie ELF. So I smiled and said "Are you and elf?". He looked confused and said "no.. that's my name. And this is my wife shelly".  After that as I was getting their drink orders I realized that he was legitimately mentally handicapped.  I feel like a huge douche after that!  **BTW** I don't know what the up to date politically correct way is to say it so if mentally hadicapped is wrong I apologize.

Honest mistake. We all have those "foot in mouth" moments.

Is it awful that I laughed? You didn't know, don't be too hard on yourself.

Don't feel bad, you couldn't have known really.  I work in concessions at one of our sports venues - so last weekend this guy comes up to get a beer, and his voice is all hoarse - so seemingly obvious to me, I tell him he sounds like he's been cheering too much already.  (This was pregame)  He informed me that he was hit by an IED, it cut into his neck, and that was why his voice was like that, and that it had been 2 years.  I felt like a total ass.  There just is no coming back from that, although my coworker tried to help me out.....
