If the invitation says cocktail attire? I have a pair of very nice black dress slacks I planned to wear with a red dressy top

If the top is very fancy and the slacks fit you well I say go for it. But I'd still try to find a dress.

It's a red tank top but I plan on wearing a bolo/sweater/not sure what its called.
It's a shimmery red and hangs a bit lose on me. It comes down a bit in the front but not enough that it flashes anyone and its kinda sparkly at the top.

I was the same way the first time I had an event to go to also. But a nice black dress will always work, something simple, and then just use it for any/every special event. Hell the only dress I have is my "little black dress" and my dh is starting to get sick of seeing it!!

Lol, I can use it as an excuse to shop!
The only thing That makes me hesitant to buy anything is there is damn good chance he will be out of town for the party like he was for the Christmas party and then I'd have wasted money on a dress.
