Thyroid medication..Armour?...turned more into a vent sorry.

I know this is a rather random place to post this, but I wanted to be anon so..

Does anyone have any experience with the thyroid medication Armour?

My grandmother started taking this medication a year ago. Her bp went up, and she became delusional. Her dr. insisted she keep taking the medication, but as far as I know, never tested her thyroid levels again. My grandma ended up taking double her dosage for some months before we caught it.

In October she started loosing weight, vomiting, having chest pains. All these are side effects of that medication. Add to the fact that she was accidentally taking more than prescribed...How the fuck did her doctor not catch this?! I guess I'm just trying to find someone to blame.

Once that problem was fix, she stayed sick. (My aunt has been the one "in charge" of taking her to the dr.) In November my mom stepped in. Got second opinions, and kept pressing her primary dr. to do more test. Finally, after months of her being so sick, they have confirmed that she has a very fast spreading cancer. It supposedly started in her lungs, and now (according to this dumbass of a dr.) has spread within a month all over her body.

WHY? WHY DID IT TAKE THE DOCTORS SO LONG? HOW CAN A WOMAN THAT HAS BEEN HEALTHY HER WHOLE LIFE, NOT BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY WHEN SHE SAYS SHE SICK?! IF THIS IS SUCH A FAST MOVING CANCER WHY DIDN'T THEY DO A BIOPSY BACK IN DECEMBER WHEN THEY FOUND THE TUMORS? AND WHY THE FUCK ARE THEY ALLOWING HER TO STAY SO MISERABLE AND ACTING LIKE THERE'S NOTHING THEY CAN DO?

She's got an appt with an oncologist next week, but as fast as this is affecting her...I'm so worried that they are just not doing anything right/or fast enough.

The main reason I wrote this post was wondering if the medication had been linked to cancer. My grandma has no history of cancer in her family, and has never even had any surgeries of any kind. Never been in the hospital. The worst she ever had was shingles.

Armour thyroid medication is a naturally occurring hormone that's taken from pigs (usually). Human's take it to replace their thyroid hormone when they aren't making enough naturally for whatever reason. I wouldn't think it would be the cause of your grandmother's cancer. I think all of these things happening, with the Dr giving your grandmother too much Armour and her cancer showing up are coincidences. I'm really sorry that your grandmother, you and your family are having to go through this. :(

My mom takes synthroid as well. She's been moved around a few times to find the right med, and she said she's never heard of Armour either. She's had problems with her thyroid for 20+ years.

The thyroid medication issue and the cancer are probably not related. The double dose of thyroid medicine certainly could have caused weight loss and heart palpatations. That is why there is a warning that it should not be used for weight loss. My doctor tests my throid every 6 months, so I don't know why her dr would not do so. Who discovered the tumors? How have they diagnosed the cancer as fact acting without a biopsy. Both my mom and step dad had cancer...different kinds. With him, they found a spot on his lungs during a routine exam for another procedure. They could not tell us whether it was cancer without a biopsy. My mom had a lump in her breast...same thing, no diagnosis of cancer until the mammogram and biopsy. With the biopsy, they could tell us the type of tumor.

Sadly, people can come up with diseases when it appears that there was never a history. No one in my mom's HUGE family had ever had breast cancer (she had 20 siblings.) I have been diagnosed with lupus and no one on either side has ever been diagnosed.

I am sorry you have experienced this. Some one in the family needs to request all of your grandma's medical records and keep a notebook of everything. Good luck.

Okay you lost me. What kind of cancer is it??

I dont have experience with armour but i have had thyroid cancer, and I can tell you what I was told...there is no known link between thyroid cancer and any medication, food, vaccine, etc. There.is really no known cause for it at all. It can take decades to develop and will not show signs until it ia actually cancerous.

I Didnt catch what type of cancer she has but if it is thyroid i hope this helps a little bit?

I wanted to add that I am levothyroxine. I have taken thyroid meds for 37 years...was diagnosed as a teen. I have read some who take Armour swear by it and prefer it to synthyroid.  I don't know...just know we are having trouble getting my levels right over the last 2 years. I think I could double my meds and have zero impact.

One thing I noticed when I was caring for my parents is that when it is a person we love, it just seems like nothing is done right or fast enough. I really encourage your family to ask lots of questions, take notes, and research everything. The internet was not very far along when I cared for my parents. Had it been, I think I could have spotted a couple of errors that led to my mom's death. Good luck and I pray things will turn around for your family.

Thanks, I'm sorry about your mom and step dad too.

It's been a crazy couple of months but this is the jist of what's been happening...

In November they did a MRI, that's when they found spots on her lung. This was not her PCP, but a specialist at the hospital that did the MRI. Her PCP was the dr. that told my aunt and mom about the spots.

They waited until January 8th to do a biopsy. Just got the results yesturday. This dr. is a pulmonologist that has been seeing her since November, along with one other visit to her Primary Dr. He was the one that told them about the diagnosis.

Armor thyroid is desiccated thyroid for hypothyroidism.  Armor doesn't cause cancer.  It helps normalize the thyroid and improve metabolism.  I suppose it is possible that as the armor improved her metabolism, it could have caused the cancer to spread faster.  But, the armor didn't cause the cancer.

Yea, that did help, thanks.

From what I understand it's lung cancer, but it's spread to her lymph nodes already. And maybe farther.

Send your mom to Stop The Thyroid Madness.  That is a very common story among synthroid aka syncrap users.
