Is this abusive?

When my son 3 year old acts up sometimes I grab his legs and hold using both of my hands and hold him upside down. He's over the bed and like a inch above it. I tell him to calm down and when he says yes I put him gently on the bed. Last I did this and he started laughing at me and calmed down. I don't want to spank him. The corner doesn't work all the time. I'm worried that I'm mentally disturbing him. I've only done this a few times.

I don't think so, but my kids would think it was fun and get in trouble just so I would do it.

Call me weird but I always try to be careful with my kids psychologically. I over analyze what I do sometimes.

Totally normal. I do it all the time too. I don't like to spank either so I try my hardest to avoid it at ALL costs.

If he's laughing when you do it you are reinforcing bad behaviour.  

If he doesn't like it and is scared, freaked out, angered by it, then I think it is.  

In any case I think it is strange and you need a different strategy.
