I was under the impression that the apostrophe was to take the place of missing letters. So why is correct to say "Donald's boat"?

It's a possessive noun. Donald possesses the boat.

Because it belongs to Donald. The apostrophe in that shows that it is possessive.

It is also to show possession. Brad's room. Nolan's toy. Nathan's shirt.

Apostrophes also show possession. The boat belongs to Donald, so the apostrophe is necessary.

The thing people usually do wrong is use an apostrophe to show plural, which usually only needs an s.

because its possessive..... the apostrophe takes the place of a missing letter when you combine two words also....like Can+ Not makes Can't
