We have not had cable in over 3 years, no dish, no nothing.  We have been saving money by getting the highest internet speed and watching Netflix and Hulu and watching the occasional show on CH131.com.  However, recently it has come to our attention that CH131 and other sites that offer streaming are now being watched more closely by the government and we can get into trouble for streaming, not downloading, but streaming.  So, we have stopped using them and have been either buying the shows from Amazon or just not being able to watch them at all.  Which sort of sucks.

Now that you have the back story, on to the reason for the post.

I got a call from our ISP trying to sell us their triple play that has cable in it.  I usually tell them no and go on my way, BUT this time I decided to give it a try.  The guy comes out to install and somehow burns out 5, count that again 5 boxes- every time he tries to connect them all.  The way it works is that the main hub is the gateway router and the other boxes all hook up to it via a coaxial cable, then they all plug into the wall for power.  With the exception of my DS's box, which was connected separately, for whatever reason.  The main hub is connected to the outside DSL line for service and then passes the signal on to the other boxes.  This guy just kept getting more main hubs and blowing them.  For a total of 5

One would think after the first couple, he might do a little checking to see why it was happening, but no, he just kept doing it.  Once he got down to his very last box, he called his boss, who came over to help.  We had unplugged everything by this time, because it really shouldn't have been doing it what it was doing.  Anyway, the boss hooks everything back up and tests it and it seems fine- then it blows, too.

Somewhere in all of this, one of them had hooked up my 32' LCD TV via HDMI to the box in our bedroom and now- NONE OF THE HDMI INPUTS WILL WORK WITH IT!  The boss told us it was an electrical issue in the wall and we would need to have an electrician come out to figure out the issue.  However, I am now out of a TV, since nothing will plug into it and everything else (Bluray player, Roku) we have is HDMI.  I am wondering who is at fault here and if we should call Centurylink up and demand a new TV.

BTW  We don't own this house and won't be getting the electrical issue fixed, as it has been working just fine up until now and I don't believe I should pay to fix something that is not broken and certainly not on the belief of Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee.  The home is in foreclosure, so the landlord will not fix it, unless it poses a danger to us and it does not.  It just means we cannot have cable.

UPDATE!

So, the tech called and I told him to just come get the boxes and that I did not want Prism TV, just let me go back to what we had before.  I did call my Uncle who is a journeyman Electrician and he said it didn't sound like it was an electrical thing, as it sounded like something in their equipment, but of course, he would need to check it out himself to know for sure.  I went shopping, but DF was there and the tech did not take the Prism gateway, just the other boxes.  He said we needed to call CL and have them change it on the hub at the corner.  I was going to call today.  About 3 hours after he left, our service went out- ALL of it.  We called, we got hung up on (accidentally, I'm sure) three times before finally getting someone who said they would have to send a tech out today to check out our hub or box.  Well, I have homework due by 3pm, so I told them to call me, if they needed inside- as I now had to go to Starbucks.

During the conversations with the CS people, I learned- they cancelled our Prism on the 23rd, although we never said one way or another until yesterday- the 24th.  The tech noted that it was our fault, this is after I told him about our TV and asked who do I call about filling out a damage form.  At one point, an agent told us that we did not have service at all and may need to get a new phone number and everything- later found out that was incorrect.  The tech changed out our RJ-45 block and took our old one, which was less than 3 months old, sorry buddy, that wasn't yours to take.  What a multitude of idiocy in one company!  How do they even manage to stay in business?

I was just complaining about centurylink the other day. I'd just had the following conversation with them and I'm sure the issue isn't over yet!
Me: how much would my bill go up if I added home phone service?
Lady: it would go from $55 a month to $59 a month for unlimited long distance and local.
Me: really? Only $4? That sound too good to be true. I mean, in my experience your company are a bunch of crooks. No offense to you personally, I know you don't make the policies.
Lady: yeah really. Would you like me to add it?
Me: it only goes up $4; for real?
Lady: yeah, it'll only be $65.10 monthly.
Me: but you just said it would be $59.
Lady: yeah but there's fees.
Me: so how much would it REALLY be after fees, taxes, etc.?
Lady: Well, after everything it would be $77.
Me: that's phone, Internet, everything?
Lady: you want Internet too? Then it comes to $122.10 monthly, after tax.
Me: See, this is why I think you're crooks. Thanks for your help. I do not want phone service.
Lady: I already turned it on.
Me: well turn it off then! I don't want it!

I admit I was a little bitchy. But I kept my tone kind the whole time. I just get fed up with them!

We also have Comcast, but I have heard that they were not much better.  So, that will be our only other option for both ISP and cable.  Dish apparently thinks my credit card is not real and I had Directv before and they tried to rip me off.  Neither of them provide internet either.  I would rather just go back in time and tell the lady on the phone NO.  LOL

I have no idea!

I really do think they're crooks!

When I first signed with them it took them 4 months to connect my service, but I still got the bills for it. It took me over a year to actually get credited for those 4 months.

I just know I'm going to be billed for home phone service now.

I can't wait to give them the what for when I get my bill!

CenturyLink sucks. Unfortunately, where I live it is the only option for internet. Have to have DirecTV for satellite. Most places the two companies will bundle, but not where I live. CenturyLink is awful about replacing things that get blown up. My PS3 blew up during a storm. Lightning came through the phone line straight into the back of it. We'd had it a month. CL maintained that it was an act of God, and that we should have had it on a surge protector. We did have it on a surge protector! But phone line into the back of the PS3, um, how exactly do I surge protect that? It blew up all the dsl filters, the modem, the router, one phone but not the other, and the PS3. They say not their fault, I say their wiring must be faulty, or not grounded, or something. But no, they refused to replace anything.

We live in a depressed area and it has been over a year and the bank doesn't even want to attempt to foreclose on it yet.  People in this area have been able to live in a foreclosed property for three years after the last payment.  The houses are just not worth the court costs to foreclose on.

The assessed value for this home was only $38,000 in 2012.  It was bought for $99,000 in 2005 and the bank is owed a lot more than that because of interest and the modification they had on the loan at one point.  Since the value actually went up last year, I believe they are waiting for the market to get stronger first.  Property taxes were only $1200 last year, so the bank would be better off waiting.

Even without paying rent, we will still get a 3 day notice to move.  We have already boxed up some things in anticipation of it and have money set aside for the move.  Why not live rent free until then?  The cable can be moved when we do.

Quoting Anonymous:

why are you even bothering to have cable installed when the house is in foreclosure? Shouldn't you be trying to move??

I have that concern, too since the guy called up and had it changed, even though we don't actually HAVE cable service.  I will be giving them a call tomorrow.

It won't do you any good.

They just lie to you! And try to bill you anyway.

I *always* ask them to document my requests in their case file. It only gets recorded about 1/2 the time, so I've started keeping a transcript of the talks myself.

I have had them try to take more than 400$ from me that wasn't justly theirs over the years.

Document, document, document!

They will, and have, lie!

We have a surge protector for the DSL, too.  It is on our backup power supply.  We also have ALL of our electronics on surge protectors.  IDK if they have ones for coaxial cables or HDMI cables, though.  Especially considering both of those cable types are not supposed to have power going through them, but since they are both made with metal wiring- they can.

Their cable box was connected to our TV via HDMI when the main box blew, the main box then sent a signal to the other boxes attached by the coaxial (including my TV in our bedroom), and that is why it is their fault, IMO.  They connected everything and then proceeded to do it several times after the first one took a hit.  One time would have been an unfortunate accident, but 5 times?  I feel like we are lucky that the other TV's didn't get messed up, too.

I am horrified to think what would have happened if the other stuff wasn't shielded.  We would have lost almost everything.  I mean thousands of dollars in electronics were hooked up at one point.  *shiver*  NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO.  Not thinking about that.  *shakes head vigorously*
