I'm in a pickle, help!

While in the middle of a conversation with my mother (on the phone) I absentmindedly opened another person's mail, their W2s.

It's the kind of envelope you rip the perforated sides off of, there is no neat way to tape this joker back up. Immediately upon seeing my mistake, I closed it, I did not look at any of his information. Should I close it up in an envelope and drop it in his box? Enclose a note apologizing for my mistake?

I would personally hand deliver it. Apologize for the mistake and explained you didnt even look at the name until it was opened. I am sure they wont mind and will be happy you gave it back to them

I would take it to his house and apologise. just tell him what you wrote here! Do it fast cause most people are waiting for them!

I would give it to him face to face and explain what you just said here. It happens, I'm sure he'll understand.

 Is it a neighbor?  If so just take it to them and explain and apologize.  Ensure them that you didn't see any of their personal info.  I accidentally opened one of my neighbors bills once.  He understood.

Put in another envelope and mail it to the correct person. I would put a note on it that you opened it  by accident.
