D-lemonine.
It is an orange-peel extract with other citrus extracts. 1000mg taken every other day for about 20 days and you should be without heartburn for a few months. I found it on amazon.com for about $10.
I figured I would put that first since a lot of people dont like reading long posts lol
Now, here is my story:

I have suffered from severe acid reflux (GERD) for years. OTC meds and prescriptions did not help or only helped for a little while. Christmas of 2011 I came down with the flu which then turned to pneumonia. For about a month I was sick and unable to hold down any foods. Once I started feeling better...I still couldnt hold down foods. It felt as if I was choking on the food. I thought it was just my body rejecting food since I really hadnt eaten in a month...I thought it would get better after my body became used to solid foods again. Except it didnt. It became worse.

I couldnt hold down anything. It felt as if the food was stuck in my throat and eventually I would throw it all up. I was always hungry. In february of 2012 I made a doctors appt and my doctor reffered me to a gastro-intestinal specialist. I was already down to 115lbs from 160lbs. I had dizzy spells and just felt generally weak. The specialist did the scope (down my esophogus) and my esophogus was so narrow that he couldnt get the scope into my stomach. He dilated my esophogus hoping that would solve the problem. It did...for about two days. And then it was hell trying to get back in to see him. After the scope my problem was much worse.

On average I was consuming half a boost/ensure drink and half a gatoraide a day. Now that is just an estimate...I was trying to drink/eat as much as possible. But none of it was reaching my stomach. Within minutes I would have to "throw it up" It was stuck in my esophogus and not even reaching my stomach. Finally, when I was able to see the specialist again they did a upper gi (which is hell when you choke on everything. And then they did a test that involved a tube up my nose and down my throat to test my esophogus muscles. Ugh. Finally it was determine that surgery was needed.

They surgically opened my esophogus. But in opening it...my esophogus is no longer able to close to prevent the stomach acid from coming up. Post-surgery I was prescribed nexium for the acid reflux. OMG. That stuff didnt work at all. I was in so much pain from the acid reflux...I could sleep, I could barely function it was so severe. They then changed it up to something else...and then changed it again. The last meds I was on for it kind of helped. I still had a couple days a week that I would get severe heartburn...but it was better than it had been.

And then my husband was fully discharged from the military. And I lost our insurance. The meds were over $400 dollars for a one month supply. We just couldnt afford that. I was panicing. If I let my acid reflux get out of hand my esophogus could close up again. I started researching and came across d-limonene. I didnt really think it would help. But it was $10 so I gave it a try. It leaves a fake orange taste in the back of your throat and makes you burp a lot for an hour or two after taking. But it works! I started taking it every day for a week...and then every other day. And now I take it every three or four days. I still get heartburn here and there. But nowhere near as severe and it never last as long. And generally I start getting heartburn when I forget to take a pull after about 5 days lol.
I just wanted to share.
Thanks for reading. I hope this can help some other people.
I apologize if there are typos...Im on my cell...

EDIT: I hope it is a bit easier to read now...tried to break it up in more readable bits lol

Also, I posted this a couple of months ago...and my acid reflux has gotten a bit worse (like maybe my body has gotten used to the d-limonene...) but with alternating otc acid reducers and the d-limonene my reflux is still under control and rarely a problem. And just keep in mind that my reflux is extreme. Many other people who have bad acid reflux would probably benefit way more than I have from the d-limonene (in my non-doctor opinion) Thank you all for reading.

I thought oranges are bad for reflux. My DS(5) has had reflux since he was born and its becoming difficult to manage. He's taking 1.5 tsps twice a day and we still have problems.

Thanks...I am fine now. Especially since I have the acid reflux under control. Generally, it is a burning sensation in your chest...when my heartburn was really had I would also get sick to my stomach. Definatly get checked out. Good luck!
