Do you hire a photographer for your family/kids pictures or do you go to chain stores like JC penny? 

How much do you typically spend?

Wow this is a heated discussion between these ladies. This is how I see it. When people are just starting they low ball because they really need the experience. And weather you spend 20, 50, or 500 on family portraits I'd ask to see some of their work to know what you're going to get. And there are really talented people out there that aren't seasoned pros.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with having photography as a hobby. However, you get what you pay for, and if you give $50 to some random person with a camera, I'd expect to have wasted $50. You don't have to spend a fortune, but you need to find someone with true talent and experience. "Seasoned professionals" are worth the money! 

And Anon is correct--are you paying taxes quarterly?

find someone whose just starting out and doesn't charge much yet. I charge $50/session and hand over the edited cd with copyright release.

We're out there. Look for us, ask friends, Craigslist, Facebook.......

I take the kids pictures myself but I get a photographer for family photos. It's $40 2 changes plus. 2 locations
