What are some misconceptions you have of them?
Ok, I didn't make this post for one word to get pick apart:
misconception: A mistaken thought, idea, or notion; a misunderstanding
But if you must nitpick then use the word stereotype.
My paper is to write about something we know from person experience to not be true but others (that haven't been in my shoes) have their own false thoughts about. This is the first word to pop into my head so sue me if it's not what you would use.

I'm not one, but my brother was army. One misconception I had was the pay. His wife had to work even with his deployment pay.
