If they didn't pay enough in over the year.

How is that possible though? Like they claim to many on their w4 or something? I'm sorry, I know this sounds really dumb, I'm 24 and I just really don't know this stuff.

I pay because of the amount of my income, the tax rate I pay ( I pay a lower tax rate because the majority of my income is from investments) and I  have/claim very few write offs (because I don't lose money on the majority of my investments).  I do not have a child that I claim, so I get no credits/deductions there.  The only time I have gotten money back is when I lost a lot of money and I got to right off part of the loss.

I have no idea.  My dad owns his own business and makes well into six figures and usually owes around 20k at tax time.

Yes, they claimed too much on W4s, or they bought/sold property that is taxed, or a number of other things that are taxed.

My DH has to pay on occasion because he gets bonuses during the year and they may push him to a higher tax bracket.
