would you be offended or am i over reacting? *edit*

Posted by   + Show Post

just got off the phone with dh's cousin. apparently they dont like coming over here in the winter (or rainy weather) because we do not allow smoking in the house. I do not want my house to smell like an ashtray but it sucks that family wont come over for a better chunk of the year because of it. I have been tempted to say f--k it, let them smoke in here but then i remember what my mothers house always looked and smelled like from smokers. and i am actually upset that that is the reason why they dont come over here. would you be offended too or am i getting upset for no reason?

you all are replying faster than i can read LOL ok to answer a few questions:

1. we  do go over there and deal with the smoke smell and the wall of smoke that you literally walk into, i can tolerate it for a few hours before i get sick

2. would you want your kids around that much smoke (for those who are saying so go over there)

3. i am offended and upset that they cant be bothered to visit, yes they are respecting boundries but i think they are going about it in the wrong way.

Why are you offended?  Its their choice to smoke, and they are respecting your rules and don't want to be in a place where they cannot when its freezing outside.

Makes total sense.

You cannot go over to THEIR house?

Your house, your rules. If they wanna be butthurt because they can't indulge their habit outdoors and just tough out whatever weather there happens to be, then maybe they ought to just quit. But until then, they can be all the antisocial they want, if their habit is more important than family.

And I used to be a smoker, so yeah...no hate for smokers, but if you're going to put that shit ahead of other people, then you just plain suck. Smokers are entitled to smoke. But they are also obligated to follow the rules of whatever surroundings they happen to be in. Don't sweat their neurosis about it. Their problem, not yours.

first let me start off by saying you're a right nasty bitch with the attitude, we do go over there but the smell is over powering and gives me migraines, but i suck it up and go over anyways. but that question can go both ways, why do we always have to go over there?

You're getting upset over nothing.  You don't want smoke.  They don't want to come. What is there to be offended about?

What is with everyone getting butthurt over boundaries?

So take your kids over there.

Or meet them at McDonalds.

Or tell your kids to suck it up.

Why do people have to come to your house to see your kids?

my dad and my sister are both heavy smokers, and i do not allow smoking in my house either. they still come around, because smoking outside for 3 minutes is worth getting to visit with my family. hey my house my rules, and when i am at their house they can make the rules. i also do not allow shoes in my house, which makes my parents so annoyed, but they follow the rules because it is my house....

I'm a smoker and I visit non smokers homes, I would deal. If I want to smoke at work I smoke outside even thou my boss told me I can smoke in the office if it's too cold or rainy but I prefer not to. But as another person said, could they smoke in ur garage (if u have one) with the door open of course? I don't smoke inside my own home unless it's in my bedroom and when I have gatherings everyone must smoke out side becuz of the children

I agree with you.  Don't let them smoke in the house.  Yes it sucks cause they won't come during the yucky months but it does keep the smell away.

What I don't get is why they think they should be able to smoke inside someone elses house.  Isn't it common curtousy to smoke outside when people visit?  My sil boyfriend always goes outside when they come here to smoke, rain or shine.

You could always put the spin on it where you don't want your kids inhaling second hand smoke.  Maybe that would sway them to be ok to visit if they smoke outside.  And really, how long does it take to smoke one cigarette?   Do you have a covered porch or deck so they are out of the elements but still be able to be outside?
