Is it wrong for kids to say Yes Sir and Yes Ma'm to teachers?

My son (8) said his teacher told him not to say that to her, that it's disrespectful! He said his dad told him it's good manners when speaking to an adult, and she told him not to do it at school then....

The only reason I can see that it would be disrespectful is if he said it with a snotty tone.

Could it have been his tone?  I would have a problem with a teacher not respecting the manners I have worked to instill in my children.

I do not like it. It has always made me feel weird to be called that. I really, really do not like it.
