Yes...if they are hit first and cannot walk away because the person is chasing them they sure as hell may end it.

This. Kids hit, and kids get hit. It's a learning process for all of them. My dd has been taught that if someone is going to hit you or hurt your feelings... you simply walk away. Not giving that person attention sometimes the worst punishment. But if someone is going to continue to try to hurt you, then go ahead and defend yourself.
