Does HIPPA still apply after someone dies?

I need my daughter's grandmother's medical history, on her dad's side. She died young of a neurological disease, but I'm not sure what.

Cause of death should be on her death certificate which you can view at the county court house or city where she died. It is unlikely that her medical records even still exist given how long ago she died.

If the file still exists, the only way you can get it is through a court order.  That's the only way we would/could release files to someone other than who was authorized.  Short of a court order, our lips were sealed and the files wouldn't see the light of day.
