So I decided to actually check it this morning and got a message saying "Your refund has been applied to a past irs obligation" not a big deal since we knew we owed from last year. I'm just curious how long it will be before they deposit the rest into our account since we didn't owe all of it. It will feel so good not to owe them anymore though!!! Yay!!
!
ETA.....
Our refund was well over twice what we owed, and as of last night it still said processing so I am assuming that it is going thru the steps of taking their portion out. We filed on the 3rd so I didn't expect our part of it back for another few days at least.
yes the $2700 is including all of that. We actually just had last years taxes reviewed by the IRS about 2 months ago and they gave us the updated amount of $2400 so I am allowing $300 for added interest since then. Which thinking about it might be a little low..... but still you get the point I'm sure lol
Quoting invisibleme:
Did you calculate the interest as well.
Quoting leota29:Yes we added in the fees. and what we owed was less then half of our refund.
Quoting lnrmom:This.
There should be a phone number you can call on Monday to double check.
Mine finally gave me a deposit date.
Quoting FooLynRoo:
dunno, but sounds like they took it all if you ask me.
when you calculated how much you owed did you include fee's and fines?
We have an offset of over $330 coming out of our refund from a 16-year old debt that honestly (and stupidly), we forgot about.
We're ecstatic to see it paid and gone finally.
Wait a few days and you can either call IRS directly (800-829-1040), though they won't get specific but perhaps will answer other questions you may have or just continue to check online. We eFiled our return on the 30th of January and knew about the offset by the 1st of this month, and spoke directly with the agency that was taking the amount.
We called on Wednesday or Thursday of this past week and spoke directly with the IRS to make sure that everything appeared to be in order with our return/banking information and while vague, the CSR assured us that it was.
Found out this morning that our refund, with the offset taken out already, is expected to be deposited on the 13th. Normally, I would not have even done our taxes yet but my husband has been out of work due to first a back injury and then double pneumonia and has no vacation/sick time accumulated to cover the 2 1/2 weeks he's been home. Come the 14th, which would be a normal pay day for us, he will receive nothing. *sigh This refund will be our financial life source for a few weeks (he returns to work Monday) plus paying things off/several payments in advance, etc.
Quoting leota29:We know the amounts just not when to expect the difference.... and the wheres my refund page isn't telling us that. If it doesn't update by monday we will just call. Its not the end of the world to wait a little longer and I am beyond happy that the debt it paid!! I'm doing my happy dance lol
Quoting Lizardannie1966:Contact FMS, which is Financial Management Services for the Department of the Treasury @ 1 (800) 304-3107 and follow the prompts through the automated service. They should be able to tell you, if you're not already aware of what the amount should be, what the offset amount to your refund has been. From there, simply deduct that amount from your original refund estimate.
ETA--I am wrong and they'll only tell you the phone # of the agency that was able to request successfully an offset amount to be taken from your refund for a debt. FMS will not give you the actual amount taken out and neither will the IRS.
When you spend 10 hours a day doing returns and having people call you constantly asking when to expect it back you learn to pay attention lol
There's no guarantee it will be next Friday but the general pattern seems the be that the status changes around Wednesday and the money is deposited on Friday. There have been a couple that were deposited on a Monday or Wednesday but about 95% were Friday.

Thank you, your more helpful then the IRS website lol!

I've done 72 tax returns so far this year (I'm a CPA) and according to the pattern I'm seeing with refunds you will probably get the rest of yours on the15th.
I totally expect the IRS to take their time on this to make sure they get their portion cleared up which is fine with me, I hate being in debt. I have never even had a credit card in my life. Normally we would have just paid the taxes off when we filed but since he had to change jobs when I got sick we were not able to do that last year.

Ours went from processing last night to this message this morning does that mean anything? I guess what I am asking is will there be an update to tell us when to expect our deposit after they are done processing the part that we owed?

Not really, it just means they got to the point in processing where they discovered they were keeping some of the money and updated the status to reflect that. It will change to the date to expect the deposit soon.

Debt is not fun. Not whatsoever and have been there. Apparently was STILL there as again, we ignorantly forgot about this 16-year old debt. Who does that? lol ;)
Life happens. To all of us, in one form or another, know what I mean?
I hope the IRS won't drag their feet in your case for long. :)

I wonder why ours doesn't say that.... was this the first time you checked yours? I'm wondering if it will update after the amount we owe is taken out. Like maybe it's going thru the steps? We have no other debt and our refund was $5800 minus they about $2700 we owe, now I'm worried as to where the rest is and why yours has details and mine doesn't.

We filed on the 1st...and when I checked today it said that x amount was applied to a past due o ligation and x amount will be deposited on the 13th.....
Hummmmm I just had a thought..... DF was in school this year, we are supposed to file an amendment on our taxes the first or next month, I wonder if thats messing with anything.... just thinking out loud. I wouldn't think that would do anything since it hasn't been filed yet.
