Confused as f***

I am no expert. I admit that. But I am really confused about this.

My mil does our taxes for us..

Last year we got around $6,000 from federal.
This year we are only getting $4,000. No changes were made in how much they take out of paychecks (dependants stayed the same)... But made about $5,000 more this year then last year. It didn't put us into a different bracket from last year.

I guess I am confused on how this is done...

Not sure, my mom does ours. All I know is that if I try and do it myself I never get back as much as when she does it.

Your child tax credit could be different, if you made any home improvements last year that may have given you a credit, charitable donations different?, do you qualify for EIC? That extra $5K could have changed your benefit. Did she use a tax software program? You can compare each line item side by side and see what the differences are if so.

the best advice I can give you is to learn to do your own taxes. then you won't wonder why it changed so much

Our kids are all under ten... Not sure if that has to do with anything.

We rent. Have always rented.

No donations made

We should qualify for the eic, according to the website

She used Turbo tax I think.

And yes, I think I will look into how to do my own (as a PP stated), so that I will know from now on.

Doesn't matter the kids age, child tax credit is income based. You could have made just enough to knock that down a bit.

EIC is like a bell curve. You could have qualified for the maximum amount last year, and this year made just over that do your credit could have been reduced.

The more you make, the more they take.

You earned an extra 5k last year and you expected tye same refund you got the year before? It doesn't work like that. When your income changes, your refund, or tax owed (yes that happens sometimes) changes too. If people got the same refund/tax owe every year, why bother doing taxes? The government would just send you a check every Feb.
