Is it a hassle?  Do people make weird assumptions?

I have a different last name. I doesn't bother me really except with my youngest. I hate her dad and he is worthless. I wish I could change her name to something else.

No. My last name is different because I never took my husbands last name legally. In social settings I go by my DH's last name. When I sign something, I sign my legal name. I have had people ask me if we were really married, but other than that, nothing really.

It's not really a hassle, I just always get asked "is the father involved?" I'm married to my kids father, I just haven't changed my last name, I will eventually.

I'm sure they will. My oldest has her dad's last name. This baby will have her dad's last name and I will keep my last name forever. 3 last names ah!!

No. And if people make weird assumptions, well, I don't give a care.

my older children have their bio-dads last name. they have a younger brother who has the same name as my husband and me and it doesn't seem to bother them.

people don't really question why, they just seem to understand.

no, everybody just called me Mrs. Son's Last Name, I never bothered to correct them because it really didn't matter to me.  I knew to whom they were referring, no big deal.
