What is going on with our children these days?

Is it just me, or does it seem like kids are becoming more advanced than kids in the past? Like My DS is only in the 1st grade, and they are already learning algebra concepts. I remember when I was in the 1st grade, we were still focusing one writing our names correct and learning time and counting pennies...
Now my 2.7 yo knows her ABC's, recognizes her letters in random order, counts to 11 and recognizes 0-9, recognizes 6 shapes and 4 colours.... Now at first I thought this was something.. I thought, she's pretty damn smart ( well I still do) but as i came to find out, this is normal! I was talking to a few other moms with kids around her age, and they too were talking about how their kids knew all this. and she picks it up in no time at all. All I have to do it tell her something a couple few times, or show her, and she has it. Its just amazing to me. Has it always been like this, or does it have to do with technology? I remember It wasn't until I was in kinder, before I knew my ABC's and learned to count. What happened? Its pretty cool but almost scary lol.
So what do you think, is it the technology, TV shows, food or what?
They are trying to teach more advanced techniques earlier, while eliminating any education that they don't view as necessary.
I think they are learning more in some areas, and less in others. My 17 year old neighbor has no idea how to address an envelope, and I remember writing pretend letters and addressing an envelope in 2nd grade. My entire 4th grade class had penpals from Africa.
They also don't seem to be teaching cursive handwriting anymore. I guess the theory is that keyboarding is more important. Whatever.
Honestly no one really taught her this stuff. I was surprised that she came to me pointing out letters. Now I have told her in passing what letters were and things like that. But I never made her sit and learn anything. IDK what it is, but I don't think she learned it from me. And she is not in day care or preschool. She doesn't pay attention to TV so not a lot of that either. IDK where she gets it.. but she is not the only one. I have spoken to a lot of parents around here that say the same thing. Maybe its in the water? lol JK. But I assure you, she has a very typical childhood.
And as far as my son goes, I think its crazy! I don't understand why not keep it to the basics? Like we used to have it.. some of the things he brings home, I don't always understand.. because there are things that was just not taught in school at all when I went. All these different concepts. Its like another parent said at parent night.. will there be classes to teach the parents on these lessons, so we can help our kids with their homework?

Damn hybrid children making my regular babies seem slow. ;(
Parents are more concerned with having hybrid children than with actually allowing the children have a childhood.
Lol, algebra has never been necessary in my life. And I made a decent living.

I agree, but it is still a necessary skill to an extent.

True. I still write in cursive, and it boggles my son's mind. I don't see a point in teaching it to him. Sad as I am to see it go.

I do agree wit this. Its sad to see this stuff go. I don't know if they are going to teach cursive writing at DS school, but I will be here.. as well as writing hand written letters.. Hell, we were taught how to write checks! When learning about the value of money, we were also given check books where we would write out the amount.. we even had a class store. Were we were rewarded with fake money in a pretend bank account, and if we all turned in our home work on time and behaved, at the end of the week, we were able to buy an item from the class shop ( just things like pencils, erasers, pogs lol ).
