Black Nurse Barred From
Handling White Baby

Tonya Battle, an African-American
nurse in Flint, Mich., is suing her
Hurley Medical Center employer for
discrimination after she was instructed
to stay away from a white newborn,
writes the Daily News .
The lawsuit states:
"The father told the
[nurse in charge]
that he did not
want [any] African
Americans taking
care of his baby."
It adds that, during the conversation
with Battle's supervisor, the father
rolled up his sleeve to reveal a tattoo
of a Swastika.
The court documents say: "She
[BATTLE]was shocked, offended and
in disbelief that she was so
egregiously discriminated against
based on her race and re-assigned."
WNEM TV5 reports that a meeting was
then held to tell staff about the new
policy regarding the baby.
And when Battle, an employee since
1988, returned to work she saw a note
in the patient's file that read: "No
African American nurse to take care of
baby."

I hate that there are people like this raising children.

Sick, poor baby's going to have to grow up in a family like that :(

BUT I don't see how suing the medical center will help... it wasn't their call... They were just respecting the parents wishes (which unfortunately were FUCKED UP)

I suppose they could have told him too bad but I can imagine the head nurse would be afraid to... IDK... Weird, stupid, sad situation.

If my newborn needed care I wouldn't care if the nurse was polka dotted, as long as they were properly trained. People are so stupid. Poor baby has to forever be around that kind of influence.

Oh my F-ing god. What a moronic request by the parents. I hope there is a way he can get investigated.

When I was pg with my 17yo and making an appointment with the ob, the receptionist made sure to inform me that the doctor was black. I always thought that was odd, but maybe she was just trying to weed out parents like that.

Suing the hospital is stupid. While this man may have an ass where his brain should be he had a right to do what he did. The hospital didn't discriminate HE did but he is allowed. Unless there's a law I don't know about which is more than possible

As messed up as those parents are. The hospital should have made sure their wishes were met, especially if it was in thei paperwork!

The lawsuit is frivolous. When my first son was born, I asked that I have an American doctor. My husband was coming in from Iraq and I was afraid that he would be aggressive towards an Arab physician. It's the parents right to set conditions, even if they are ignorant and prejudiced
