Is God a man or a woman ?

Why is God seen as masculine or male ? How do we know that God isn't a Goddess.
Think about it it. God created all, he gave life. But in humans and in nature about 98% of the time females "give life". They are the ones responsible for continuing the circle of life. They are the ones that give birth.
So when the idea of God came about, why wasn't he a she, a Goddess. Wouldn't it make more sense ?
Thoughts ?
Both, kind of, in the sense that he isn't either... both man and woman were made "in his image".
Niether. Gender and sex are constructs of mortality. It is the limits of our mortality that lead us to attempt to perceive God as someone that is mortal like us because we are unable to comprehend what does not fit the realm of our familiarity. Although we commonly refer to him as a male, I do not believe that God is bound by the limits of biology and this physical necessity that is sex. God is omnipotent and as such, not bound by our rules.
All else is a dumbing down of the true omnipotence and glory of God for the sake of our feeble human capacity to perceive and understand.
