Can a guy & girl really be just friends?

Can a guy and girl (maybe not both in a relationship, but at least one is at any given time, and even both sometimes are In a relationship) be strictly platonic friends?
Just to outline some details, they go out together, haven't ever slept together or been in a relationship. They can always give/get advice from each other and talk about their problems with each other, including exchanging relationship advice.
Do you ladies think its possible to stay platonic?

Yes. All but one of my guy friends are like little brothers. The one that isn't I dated for a bit, and it didn't work that way with us. But him, my husband and I are all good friends!

It's platonic until one day after a few drinks and blah, blah, blah, we know what happens. At least that has been my experience. I stay away from male friends.
