by a store employee?
Thank god I have never had to be on food stamps. I would not let anyone put you down for food stamps if you truly are hurting and need them. If you are just taking advantage of the system then shame on you, but I get the feeling that's not the case here. I think food stamps carry such a negative contation because people do abuse the system. May god bless you and your family! Its always heartbreaking to hear someone struggle like this. You tell that store employee to shove it!
i accidentally embarrassed a food stamp user one time. i was in my late teens & working at a grocery store. i had never seen food stamps and didn't know what they were. being young & dumb, i didn't think to be discrete and i yelled for help. "hey! this lady has food stamps!! can someone come show me what to do!!" i didn't purposely try to make her feel bad for having or using them, though.
..never been on food stamps.
I feel embarrassed every time I go to a certain grocery store around here. You can't just swipe your card, enter pin, and leave. You have to show the cashier the card because they have to push EBT on their screen. It feels embarrassing when there are people behind you and you have to show your card. I try not to shop there.
We were on them a few years ago when our daughter was born and my husband lost his job. We had an employee scoff at me when I went to swipe my card, then the lady behind me chewed him out because I was purchasing fresh fruits, bread, and chicken and I should hold my head up for being smart on the food I picked out for my family. Thankfully we are in a position we no longer need them, but I do like to be polite when I see others pushing down the people who need them and are using them correctly. (And yes, we bought snacks with them but we didn't have an entire cart filled with soda candy and chips. We had a few boxes of snack cakes and a 2 liter of pop and the rest was food for meals.)
I remember way back then when it was "paper" food stamps. I worked in a convenience store and there was one woman that would always send her kids in one at a time with a $1 FS and they would buy a piece of penny candy and take her the 99 cents. She had 6 kids so when they all got back in the car, she would come in with the change and buy smokes. I told my boss about it and she said next time the kids come in tell them you can't take the fs because they were issued to the mom and not the child...........boy was that mom pissed.
I always tried to make people feel comfortable and be discreet when they are using foodstamps as a young cashier. There is enough judgment in the world. I don't want to be another one.
I personally am not embarassed by using food stamps, but I did stand up for others once. There's a lady that works at Safeway, who, EVERY TIME, lets you swipe your card, lets it fail, and says "what kind of card? oh, FOOD STAMPS" ... and she says that last part really loudly!!! It's obvious that she's supposed to select credit, debit, or ebt before you swipe in order for the transaction to go through... but it was really starting to feel like she was waiting just so she could call out the food stamp users... I know that sounds crazy but I went through her line often, and she did it to everyone. but if someone said credit, she just went about her business without saying anything.SO one day after she shouted out my food stamps, I simply told her "Maybe you don't realize it, but many people are embarassed or ashamed that they need to use food stamps. it's hard for them to admit they are going through a rough time even to themselves, let alone have a grocery clerk announce it loud enough for the entire store to hear"Ever since then, she hasn't done it, and has gone from 100% bitch to actually smiling at people who come through her line!
