Mandatory flu shots? *Edit

Should flu shots be mandatory for health care workers (nurses, doctors, etc)?  Why or why not?

**Thanks ladies!  I am writing an invitational speech for a public speaking class and this is the topic I have chosen.  I have to give pros and cons on a controversial topic and engage in conversation with my classmates on their views.  You all have been very helpful in getting some ideas going.  Thanks again!

What about the patients that are high risk for getting sick?  Should non-vaccinated nurses or doctors be allowed to work with those patients?

If their employer wants them to.

I don't care one way or the other as long as they're told when they apply.

Should they be fired if they refuse?

This exactly! Let people be aware of the risks and decide for themselves what is put into their bodies!

No, it shouldn't. The vaccine is based of the flu from the previous year. It's not a guarantee to be effective against the new strain. Besides, some people don't react well to the vaccine. I've had it pounded into my head for the last 5 years that you can't get sick from the vaccine, however ever time I've taken it, I've been horribly sick a few days later. The last 2 years I haven't taken it, and guess what, no flu for me.

Should they be forced to wear a mask if they are not vaccinated?

Without a medical waiver yes. They know what's expected of them. It's like showing up to work. If my dh stopped wearing his protective gear at work he'd be fired too.

I assume you are talking about employees hired before the policy change. As long as they are given a time period to decide to comply or move on, I see no problem with it.
