Dh wants to take our 4, almost 5 year old hiking this weekend. The weather has been great, but now the high is supposed to be 38 with a chance of snow, they're going in the morning so it will probably be a little colder than that. Is my southern kid going to freeze to death if he goes? lol It's not the temp I'm so much worried about as the dampness and rain/snow. Opinions?
Quoting RunningMommaof2:
Bundle up and he'll be fine especially if you're hiking. Moving around will help keep you warm. It's ok if it's snowing, but stay home if it's raining. Cold plus rain equals a miserable day.
It will be right at the temp where it could be either one and the place they're going is an hour and a half away so it would really suck if they got there and he got too cold after 20 minutes.
Quoting mom2theA-team:I'd be more worried about the wind.... Are they hiking at elevation? If so, I wouldn't send him. My five year old can barely handle hikes at elevation with rain and snow.... Otherwise, I send my kids all of the time:)
No. Idk how windy it will be. Not bad, I don't think. But it's supposed to rain/snow mix for 3 days leading up to it.
Quoting Anonymous:ah hahahahaha!!!
lol, seriously I would take 3 degrees as the REASON to go outside!
omg, it's 3 freaking degrees outside, let's go out and enjoy the warmth while it lasts!
Kiddo will be fine lol

Quoting D.O.E.:whats the temp in canadian speak? lol
Err..3 degrees celsius. lol
Yeah. The thing is your body is acclimated to it, his isn't. If it had been 60-70 where you are and then dropped to 3* and damp and snowy/rainy you'd likely be cold too.
um, no. it HAS been around 15 degrees and shot down to 3 by the next day. This is Canada! I wouldn't even have my son wear a hat in 3 degree weather. Acclimation or not.

Quoting wkukid:I would wait til it's warmer.
I'm torn. My South Dakota self wants to laugh at this. lol But my kid is a weenie southerner! haha
Depending on the wind, I'd say yes. I'm sure he will be fine but cold+ wind is not a great combo--- even for my husband and I who are from Michigan...

Depends on the kid honestly. I used to go hiking all the time in weather colder then that.
A little bit, that's why it almost reached 40. It was pretty windy though. My kids are use to the snow/cold, though.
Quoting connorsmommy120:He'll be fine, just dress him up in layers. It was almost 40 here yesterday, and my kids were sweating in their snow gear while playing in the snow.
Was it sunny?
Just dress him in layers and make sure he has a hat and something over his hands. I'm in Ontario and 3 Celsius sounds AWESOME right about now! It was at the freezing mark today and my kids were happy with how warm it was!
