20% is the STANDARD tip for wait staff!

10% is NOT the standard.
$5 on anything is NOT the standard.
Tipping 20% of your total bill BEFORE any discounts are applied is the standard.
When you stiff a waiter/waitress/server they are actually paying to serve you because they get taxed on a percentage of their sales regardless.
If you cannot afford to tip 20% go eat at a cheaper restaurant or go get fast food where tipping is not the standard.
(I understand leaving less of a tip for bad service, but at least 10% should be left regardless for bad service!)
If you go out to eat knowing you are not going to tip regardless of how the service you are just a cheap bastard.
Have a nice night!
I tip based on service. If you are a crappy server then don't expect much. Do your job and you will get something.
Seriously, there was another post exactly like this featured in the past week or two. Is that all you're looking for? I typically will do 20-21% for decent service, higher if its great or someone I know, but if I get bad service, you don't DESERVE any tip. I don't judge bad service on things that are out of the server's control, like food taking too long or being messed up, but when I have not had my drink refilled once and it's 3 in the afternoon so you're not packed at all, you can deal with whatever I give you.
Anyways, tipping is an optional thing. If it were required, restaurants would automatically add it in. It's good form to always tip well, but it's not illegal to not leave a tip.
