SRO Accidentally Fires Gun at N.Y. High School
HIGHLAND, N.Y. — After an officer’s gun accidentally discharged at Highland High School Tuesday, Highland Central School District has suspended its resource officer (SRO) program.
Officer Sean McCutcheon, a veteran police officer with more than two decades of experience, accidentally fired his gun at 1:38 p.m. in the high school’s highway. No one was injured during the incident, nor was anyone nearby when the gun went off, USA Today reports.
The district implemented the SRO program following the Newtown, Conn., shooting. During the planning stages, administrators decided to hire trained security personnel with law enforcement backgrounds. Officials also agreed to allow officers to carry their side arms inside buildings.
HCSD is currently investigating the incident.
Accidents happen! There should not be guns in a school period. The chances of the school getting shot up are very low. It is much more likely that accidental shootings like this will occur, and these will kill our children as well! The focus needs to be on providing adequate mental health services for all individuals and preventing bullying etc.
I don't want any guns in my child's school, I don't care if they are carried by teachers or criminals, I just don't want them there!
