My nephew and my second cousin, so his third cousin. I think it's weird but they talk to each other in a flirty way. They didn't grow up together and our families don't even hang out or anything.

There are cultures where 1st cousins are fine, even ideal... So 3rd cousins probably wouldn't be too bad.
So what is the closet direct relative then have in common? A great-great grandparent?

Yes they share great great grandparents
