the oxford comma...to use or not to use?

Posted by Anonymous   + Show Post

Poll

Question: Both ways are technically acceptable and from what I understand the current appropriate use is without. But it makes more sense, to me, to use it. Do you use the oxford comma?

Options:

no

yes

I don't get it

I never knew there was a such thing as the oxford comma

It is actually taught to use it now. Ask any English major....I'm stealing that pic, btw!

I just feel like there should be a third part to that sentence if you wanted to use a comma.

We invited the strippers, JFK and Stalin, to our bachelor party.

Maybe not a colon, but the sentence feels incomplete with just a comma there.

Technically, in the second example, the way you're taking it would probably require a colon rather than a comma. But I still use the Oxford comma. I tend to use too many commas in general :)

I <3 punctuation!

I don't agree with that at all...
"we invited the strippers: jfk and stalin"???

I'm outdated I guess. I use it, although I knew both were acceptable.

Oh, I'm also outdated on sentence spacing. 1 space after a period is the right way now, but I was taught 2 spaces growing up.

I always use it. Even though you don't have to, it still bothers me when people don't.

Some clients require it and some hate it and are convinced it's incorrect.  Keeps me on my toes!

i love the Oxford comma, and employ it when writing letters, emails, forum posts, and text messages.

DH and I argue about this all the time. He graduated two years before me from a neighboring school. He was taught two spaces and I was taught one. It's still weird to me.
