Do you have to be dirt poor,  Can you own a home or car?

You can own a car...I think you can own a house as well.

they go by your income.. not the things you own...

I think your assets have to be under a certain amount. I don't know how that works when you own a home.

Your assets have to be under a certain amount and if I remember right, it depends on what you're applying for. The only way you'll know is if you talk to them outright if you're that curious.

They take that into account, like, there's a section on the application where they ask for any assets, but it mainly goes by income.

I own a home and a car and I'm making car payments on another car and I still qualify for everything except cash assistance

Both, things you own are considered resources.
