Bring your own dish wedding?

My friend is getting married this fall and said that she wants a small inexpensive wedding.  She is going to ask everyone to bring a dish to pass so she won't have to get a caterer.  Probably no honeymoon.  I mean she is on welfare and really poor.  Only mentioning welfare to show that she is not just being cheap.

Who does this?

People who don't have a lot of money to spend on a wedding. I think it's a good idea. It wouldn't be a sit down, take your breath away reception, but caterers can be very expensive.
