That my animosity toward my parents is hindering me from having a close relationship with God.

That's a possibility. If whatever happened between you and your parents make it hard for you to be close to them, then the idea of a loving Father in heaven, would be hard to understand and become close to as well. A lot of people struggle with that.

You have to eventually forgive and let go. Doesn't mean you have to hang with them.

Not really worried about getting into heaven. I would like a relationship with the creator where I don't feel like a cum rag and am not raging at them like a crazy person.

I guess that would depend on how they raised you and what they taught you. Were they crazy? Or are you just a brat? That is a broad subject of scenerios

OP consider some kind of coucelling with a preacher, minister, or whatever the head honcho is called in the church where you are seeking your god.

I'm sorry I would have to know back ground on the situation to give you my honest opinion. However I
Believe if you truly want a close relationship with god and work towards one you will and can have one

then perhaps  you should focus on your relationship with your parents and finding forgivness and acceptance regarding your issues with them.

That hasn't worked out very well. Through several denomination I've received nothing but rejection or ecclesiastical abuse.
