My daughters hate their "father"

The back story, on DD1's third birthday her father (also DD2's father) told me he was going to pick her birthday cake up. He picked up his wallet, car keys and house keys. He left. And he didn't come back. For years I tried to find him and keep him in touch with his girls but to no avail. DD1 remembers him leaving - DD2 was 2 at the time and doesn't.

Throughout their lives, I have never ever bad mouthed their father for the basic fact that if he did come back I didn't want their judgement to be clouded by my views. So, when he did get in touch on DD1's fifteenth birthday she completely rejected him - and has done ever since. DD2 chose to try to get to know him, but quickly agreed with DD1's view.

When their father died, DD2 was slightly sad, DD1 said she was glad. I struggle to get my head round that because she was a real daddy's girl before he left.

Has anyone else been through this?

I have with my own mother. When someone is gone that long its like they are dead already so when the actually do pass away the grieving process has already happened. My mother passed away and I had not seen or spoken to her in 16 years. I did not cry or feel bad because she was not a part of my life.
