Horrible... toddler mauled to death by pit bulls

I am not an anti-pit bull as a breed person, but I read this horribly sad story this morning in the news and did find it interesting (interesting isn't really the right word, maybe intriguing is more appropriate?) that of the nine dogs that this little girl lived with, the only two dogs that did not attack her were the only two non-pits.

Tragedy as two-year-old girl mauled to death by SEVEN pit bulls

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

A 21-month-old toddler has died after being attacked by seven pit bulls in coastal Georgia Wednesday, according to police.

Bryan County Sheriff Clyde Smith says the little girl was mauled in the yard by dogs her family owned.

Authorities say the unidentified girl's grandmother was asleep when she heard a commotion and saw the girl being attacked as she looked out of her window.

Authorities say the dogs, pit bulls and pit bull mixes, have been euthanized by Bryan County Animal Control.

At around 6.30pm, police received a 911 call from a home on Elm Drive in Ellabell about a toddler who had been attacked by a pack of dogs, Savannah Morning News reported.

The victim's grandmother, who was napping at the time, woke up to see the pit bulls mauling her granddaughter, but she could not stop the attack.

The child was pronounced dead at the scene.

It was unclear Wednesday night if charges would be filed in the case.

First responders said that by the time they arrived at the scene, the child's body was already cold, suggesting that she has been dead for some time.

Bryan County Deputy Sheriff James Beatty told the News that the girl's 12-year-old brother may have taken her out to play in the backyard and either forgot she was there, or thought she had returned.

Another way the toddler could have left the house was through the doggy door.

According to officials, the family had nine dogs in total, and the child often played with all of them.

The two dogs that were not involved in the attack were spared. They were not pit bulls.

That is so sad. How can you leave your baby unattended with dogs? That is something I will never understand.

I really don't understand how anybody could trust any dog alone with a small child. I mean, at that age even a Jack Russell or some other small breed could be dangerous!

Thats why I demand the truth in dog bite reports

According to the ASPCA: Unless it involves a pitbull the media has no interest in reporting it

Dogs do not see a baby as a person, dogs a prey driven. they must not be left alone and they must be taught right from wrong..

Unless those dogs were being beaten and starved ( which im sure that they were) would turn on something smaller as an easy meal.

It could happen to any dog.

First, thank you for putting in the op that this was not about being anti pit. As a pp said, any dog alone at that age/size is stupid and dangerous.

This should really just be a wake up call that you don't leave any small child alone with dogs. What's worse is they did it with a pack of dogs!!

You're not dead.. Until YOU ARE WARM AND DEAD. Being Cold implies more than 12 hours post death..

I feel like something is missing in this story. Why would they just randomly attack this little girl if she has played with them before like the article says? Why is the family allowed to have 9 dogs? I know my state only allows 3. 4 if you are dog sitting or the dog belongs to another family member. I live in IL in case I am asked.

I totally agree with you. I've seen some lovely, wouldn't-hurt-a-fly large dogs, and some horrible, nasty little dogs. I honestly cannot understand how some people STILL do not recognize that dogs are, at the end of the day, pack animals with a pack mentality that can revert to pack behaviour very quickly.

I just looked it up, and apparently in (Atlanta) Georgia the limit is 10 dogs.
