FU$* MY GAS COMPANY ITS 30 DEGREES! update with question

Posted by Anonymous   + Show Post

I recently moved to a new house , dh and i were staying at my parents house when our lease ran up saving to rent something bigger , meanwhile i was getting alot of help and and insight in caring for my first newborn from my mother, fast forward to 6 months later, we move dh loses his job (gets laid off from a construction company) one month after us signing the lease ,and i just returned to work from a unpaid maternity leave (my leave was a total of 6 months 3 paid last three unpaid). when we moved in it was under the plan that dh would also be working and we would have a combined income which would have been more than enough for us to pay bills and keep a roof over our head, even have money for mini vacations throughout the year.

well to get the gas on the deposit was 200.00 the electric deposit 250.00 rent and down deposit 1800.00 i paid this because i had 2k saved from the first three months of (paid maternity leave) dh spent 2k that he saved and furnished the whole house.

well when the gas bill came it was 275.00 - but since dh lost his job and rent was just paid i couldnt afford the full 275 so i paid 100.00 , then this month the bill comes again and its 500.00! dont ask me how this got so high i really dont know, were only home at night through the week and the heat is left at 71 degrees on automatic!

well this month is so tough , i had to pay rent 900.00 electric-100.00 (and misc things like gas for two weeks 75 bucks, netflix (we dont have cable) 8.00 , food, 100.00 , and pretty expensive bills from the hospital. (i was put on bed rest for a month there 20k delivery 1800, and my dd nicu stay for a month 200k my insurance is 80 percent coverage so i have to pay 20 percent of all of this so im on a monthly plan. so yes thats over 40k i am in with bills.

so dh and i reached out to 3 different charity groups who help pay your bill. this morning was our appointment to meet with them and hopefully get assistance, BUT our gas company gave us a disconnection notice the day before yesterday, we called them on Tues. explaining the assistance well be getting and that we have a 6month old so if they could just hold off for alittle longer, we also offered to make a 100.00 payment. but last night they cut us off! and its 30 degrees outside. were freezing and now we cant get the help from the charity because they said that they can only put us in the program if the gas is NOT disconnected :/ so i say fuck you gas company, heartless motherfuckers!

ok quick question and PLEASE do not tell me that im dumb or slow or whatever this just dawned on me since so many of you are saying 71 degrees is to high and warm, it literally is not that warm in here when we live it at that temp and when we get home at nights we have to actually put it up to 73 74 degrees for about twenty minutes to jump start the hit. BUT i rememeber a while back my mom and dad pointed out that all of my windows have condensation on them, you know the misty fog on the windows and they said "thats escaping heat that is making the windows wet." could that be the reason for the lack of warmth in the house and the bill being so high??

When I was in Ohio you had Columbia Gas and AEP...2 seperate companies. Not strange really. It depends on your area. I never want to see Columbia Gas again for the record.

Quoting ZakkarysMom:

So they shut off your gas but not electric? That's weird.

i am at home dh is dropping my dd to parents house until i can get this bill paid or some heat circulating in here.

Quoting ZakkarysMom:

Google emergency energy assistance. You may find some programs in your area to help. That's ridiculous that the place wouldn't help you after you got shut off. Where are you at now?

May I ask what state you live in?

Did you know the cut-off date?  Did you share that date with the charities you called?  a company has no conscience...it's not a person.  It's an organization formed with the sole purpose of making money for it's shareholders.  Why are you trying to give it human personality traits?

And when they told you the deposit was $200, did you know a deposit runs at 50% of the cost of an average monthly bill from the prior 12 months?  Did they tell you it was based on your credit?  Did you ask how it was computed?

Quoting Anonymous:

i didnt owe 675, i owed 500 and paid 100 bringing it to 400.00 and no it is not their fault because of our circumstances but they are ones that recommened these charities, i put it to use waited for an appt and once i get one they cut me off the day before, so that i couldnt even get help from the charity. i know there a company but come on its called a consious im sure they did payment arrangments or something or at least wait till the weather warmed alittle before cutting it its been int he 30's all week.i have only been here for 2 months, and i had no idea until i moved in and signed the lease that i was able to find out the average the heat runs here, because the 200 deposit was based off that and thats when they told me.

I don't want to sound crass, but why is it the gas company's fault you could not pay according to their rules?  You can call the gas and electric company and ask how much the bills have been averaging at a certain address before you rent so you'll know what to expect.

It's not their fault that you husband got laid off, or medical bills needed to be paid.  They are a company (probably a publicly held company) that has rules all people must abide by.  It would be unfair to to keep the gas on for one family and turn it off for another.  You owed $675.   Should they eat that?  Should they let people keep accruing a bill they can't afford?  Even with utility assistance you wouldn't have gotten close to paying off the $675 before another $500 bill was sent.

Oh ok. I use Excel Energy and they are gas and electric. I hope you can figure something out and have it turned back on.

Funny how it's everyone's fault - except for the person actually responsible for the bill.

Quoting Anonymous:

yea but when i made that good faith payment they cut me the next day and the day after that was my appt with the chairty who would have paid the rest of the bill in full.they didnt allow me that months payment

Quoting Sweetest_Britt:

It wouldn't have been $500 if you'd have paid the original total in full...you had nearly an extra $200 tacked onto that months bill because you didn't pay the previous one.

I would start looking at what it would do to break your lease, if you can (although sometimes not possible) and move back in with your parents.

Good faith payments only work for a months payment...they then expect you to pay the rest AND current/up to date.

Quoting Anonymous:

i am on a payment plan to pay off the hospital bills (which also needed to be shorted this month )and we have only been in this residence for 2 months, we had the help to get the bill paid  and we paid 100 dollars again to the bill as a good faith payment they still cut us off. because they wanted the bill in full, i dont know about you but i dont have 500.00 to pay on one bill outright and still have the other necessities covered.

Quoting Sweetest_Britt:

Well, it's not like you actually PAID the hospital bills outright.....is there some reason the gas bill didn't come first, especially since you were already behind on it?

Don't ever pay medical bills before living expenses.

Your gas bill should have been paid BEFORE the hospital bills. You also have no need for the house to be 71 when no one is home. Why didn't you try and cut back when the first bill was almost 300?

Yes they are wonderful.

Quoting Anonymous:

i think i have heard of that before 211 is like a state line right? they can help with paying the bill?

Quoting momoftwo0406:

Ouch that sucks. Keep checking around to see if someone can help. Does you're state have 211? In Indiana if you call it they can assist you with just about any local help. They may be able to help.
